2015:  May 9-10th:  Quapaw Quarter Association's 51st Spring Tour of Homes

  The Firehouse Hostel and Museum will be included in the Quapaw Quarter Association’s 51st Spring Tour of Homes May 9-10th!  The Spring Tour of Homes has been held since 1963 with the purpose of fostering appreciation of historic buildings and neighborhoods and the need for their preservation. The 51st Spring Tour features old, new, and sacred buildings throughout downtown that represent the rich diversity of Little Rock’s Quapaw Quarter, including:
  • The 1941 Christ Episcopal Church at 509 Scott Street
  • 1842 Historic Curran Hall at 615 East Capitol Avenue
  • Herron Horton Office/Studio/Residence built in 2008 at 1219 South Spring Street
  • The c. 1890 Haile Cottage at 417 West 13th Street
  • The 1890s house at 1411 Broadway Street
  • ...and of course the Firehouse Hostel at 1201 Commerce Street

2015:  March 25th:  Women Traveling Solo - Free Travel Education Class

  Presented by Hostelling International USA.

7:00pm - ??:   No travel partner? Don’t let that hold you back! Traveling alone as a woman can be a powerful, emboldening experience. However, safety is a consideration and Hostelling International USA will address this and other issues in our free Women Traveling Solo class. You want your trip to be memorable for all the right reasons, so we'll help you learn how to plan, prepare, pack, and travel smart  to help you get out and see the world! Join Dawn Boudreaux, Regional Engagement Manager for Hostelling International USA and local volunteer educator(s) for this informative and inspiring class!

2015:  January 9th:  Walks through History - Sandwiching in History

  Presented by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program.
The Firehouse Hostel and Museum is the first Historic Building to be presented this year.

 

Noon - 1:00pm:   Come  out to listen and learn about this historic building from 1917.
5:00pm - 8:00pm:  Come back later that same day where the Firehouse Hostel will be hosting a potluck for people interested in finding out more about the future function of the Hostel and Hostelling.  Bring a dish and join us!

2013:  November 2nd:  Cornbread Festival at The Bernice Garden

 
The Hostel will be onsite at the Third Annual Cornbread Festival being organized by and held The Bernice Garden on Saturday, November 2nd. Both those making cornbread for a living as well as those who have made cornbread all their lives will compete for the best overall cornbread in the state. People attending the event as well as a panel of celebrity judges will taste-test samples to determine the best traditional, nontraditional and sweet cornbread recipes.
   
Location:  The Bernice Garden
  • Corner of Daisy Gatson Bates and South Main, south of Interstate 630 in downtown Little Rock
  • 11:00 am - 1:00 pm:  Cornbread tasting
  •    1:00pm - 4:00 pm:  Presentation of  awards

Before 1:00 pm

  • Adults:  $ 10.00
  • Children (6-12 years of age):  $ 5.00
  • Children (5 and under):  FREE

After 1:00pm

  • Adults:  $ 5.00
  • Children (6-12 years of age):  $ 3.00 for one or two for $5.00

  The Firehouse Hostel will be onsite sponsoring the annual MacArthur Park 5K Run.

Enjoy blues, bluegrass and folk music while you stroll vendor booths for Arkansas goods, learn about nonprofits and their important work in our community, play games with your kids and experience South Main for its commitment to heritage during its modern revitalization.
